The house is named after the Buttercross itself, a famous medieval stone market cross dating from the late 14th Century. Once a meeting place in the High Street for the exchange of butter, in recent years it has been re-sited close to the house and is today managed by English Heritage.
Butter Cross
Dunster is a medieval village lying two miles from the coastal town of Minehead. Situated within Exmoor National Park, Dunster is truly the Jewel of Exmoor. Dunster's thriving economy was built on the production of specialist woollen fabric ('Dunsters') used in the manufacture of military uniforms.

Dunster itself is steeped in history and has many interesting buildings and monuments to visit - for instance the Castle, Water Mill, Benedictine Priory Church and of course, The Buttercross itself. It is of course an ideal base for touring Exmoor by car, bicycle or on foot.
Dunster yarn market

There is a network of waymarked parths from Dunster to suit most walkers. After a gentle climb of just 10 minutes you find yourself looking at some of the most spectacular scenery the area can offer. The distant Quantock Hills and Exmoor, the sea and Welsh coast are truly magnificent.
Conygar
The ancient streets and buildings are overlooked by Dunster Castle (National Trust) to the south and the Conygar folly tower to the north. Dunster is home of the famous octagonal Yarn-Market. Popular with visitors throughout the year, Dunster retains its charm and atmosphere.
